REPORT: Driving While Using Handheld Devices Informal Online Survey of Citizens of Denton, Texas 2/27/16 – 3/1/16

Back in February council began some preliminary discussion about our current ordinance that bans texting while driving and whether or not that ordinance was effective, needed to be strengthened, expanded to ban the use of all handheld devices, or otherwise revised. The one thing that seemed to be clear is that there would be discussion within council, with the public, and with our public safety leadership on this topic before action would be taken.

As an attempt to get a better sense of how citizens use handheld devices while driving, and how citizens feel about the use and regulation of handheld devices while driving I published a survey on “Driving While Using Handheld Devices” between the dates of February 27, 2016 and March 1, 2016. In total 369 people provided their input (347 of those people identifying themselves as Denton residents). I suppose that many of you on this distribution took this survey – thank you for taking the time to provide your input. If you did not get a chance to take the survey, you always have the opportunity to be heard in public hearings or through one on one communication with your representatives on city council.
